Scalding Water - Important Safety Information

10/03/2008

Customers are reminded of a recent national news story involving the tragic fatality of a 10 month old child who suffered horrific injuries after being scalded by water from a faulty immersion heater.

Although described at the time by the Health and Safety Executive as an extremely rare occurrence caused through a combination of faults on the system, East Midlands Housing has been developing a strategy to minimise the risk of a similar occurrence within one of its own properties.

One part of this strategy is to provide YOU the customer with information as to what the danger signs are and to request that YOU report any of them immediately to our call centre on 0844 892 9000.

Please report immediately:-

• Excessively hot water coming out of the hot water taps
• Excessive noise or ‘bubbling’ from the hot water cylinder
• Hot water coming through cold water taps
• A very hot cylinder or airing cupboard
• Steam/moisture in the airing cupboard and/or roof space

If you notice any of these symptoms or are concerned about the operation of your hot water system, please follow the instructions below:-

• Turn off the immersion heater switch and/or the central heating boiler switch
• Run off all stored hot water, BUT, be mindful of how hot the water could be
• Contact East Midlands Housing on 0844 892 9000, and report the incident

Reporting any such incidents will help us in assessing which of our homes could be at risk so please don’t ignore the symptoms and follow the procedure above.

Over the coming months East Midlands Housing will be identifying those properties at risk and will be implementing the necessary upgrades where necessary.

Again, let us assure you that this was a very rare occurrence, and if we are vigilant and follow this advice, such situations can be quickly made safe, and any defect rectified.

If you would like more information, please contact us on 0844 892 9000.
