Recycle those Christmas cards and make a difference!
02/01/2008
It is easy to do as High street chains Tesco, Marks & Spencer, WHSmith and TK Maxx have joined up with a conservation charity and they are hoping to recycle 100 million Christmas cards this year – and turn them back into trees.
Last year’s initiative enabled the trust to plant 22,000 trees, equivalent to a forest the size of 44 football pitches. This year the Woodland Trust is aiming to plant 24,000 trees.
It also saved 2,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide – equal to axing 100 flights around the globe.
The charity is asking people to take their Christmas cards to special bins at the participating stores throughout January, where they will be collected and recycled.
The cards will then be turned into new paper products, which will help fund Woodland Trust’s efforts to protect and extend the nation’s woodlands.
Fridey Cordingley, of the Woodland Trust’s campaign partner Recycle Now, said: "Christmas is a time when we all create too much waste - usually over three million tonnes. Recycling Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust is a simple way to help reduce this and help a worthwhile cause at the same time.
