How to stay safe

Using gas as a fuel in the home is normally very safe and problem free. However, gas has the potential to cause serious damage to health and to endanger life. Gas leaks can lead to explosions which could kill.

  • It is crucial to keep flues and ventilation grilles unblocked.
  • Carbon monoxide detectors (which can be bought from DIY stores) alert you to the presence of carbon monoxide fairly quickly.
  • If you have any concern about the safety of a gas appliance, it should be turned off and East Midlands Housing notified.
  • If you think you have been exposed to carbon monoxide you should consult your doctor.  A blood test will confirm its presence in the body.
  • The best action is preventative.  East Midlands Housing, tenants and homeowners need to be aware of the potential problems if gas appliances are not regularly maintained.
